Right, there are fifty-two weeks in a year, right? So how come, in a year of operation, the Native website only has sixteen featured bands? Er, I don't do maths. Moving swiftly on...

SUBLIMINAL GIRLS - BAND OF THE WEEK
Jim Rhesus - vocals
Jimmy 2 Shoes - guitar
Nicky Biscuit – synths, backing vocals
Danny Le Pelley - bass
Arran J Lovechild – drums
They’re down on the old ‘Space as pop punk and alternative. They sing songs about indie poseurs, the effects of drugs, and they cover Duran Duran without feeling embarrassed. They consider ‘Fairytale Of New York’ the best Christmas song ever and one of their members is so named because he wears two shoes. These are the Subliminal Girls, aka five guys from London and the South East who are aiming to strip pretentiousness away from the indie scene and get people to like what they want regardless of what’s cool.
INFLUENCES
Helen Love, The Ramones, Julian Cope, The KLF, Carter USM, Joy Division, Sex Pistols… see their MySpace for a full list
THEY SAY
They sound like “something most people won’t understand”
WE SAY
Dance to the jangling, fun electronic pop; tease the wannabes ever so slightly with sweet’n’shiny poppy guitars, and feel ever-so-slightly smug they don’t realise you’re mocking them… but hey, it’s nothing too harsh kids, we’re all friends here…
SAMPLE LYRICS
“I got my Epiphone Dot cos I’m so fucking indie / I got my pork pie hat to cover up my lack of thought” (‘Mirror’)
SIGNED
Weekender Records signed them up a mere three months after their first gig. Single ‘Burn KOKO’ is on its way…
DID YOU KNOW
Recently pulled out of a DJ set in Camden’s KOKO when they were asked if they wouldn’t mind dropping ‘Burn KOKO’ from their playlist. Says Nicky Biscuit: “They seem to be understanding that it’s tongue-in-cheek I think, initially they wanted us to take the song down (from MySpace). We will be DJing there again soon.”
